Parks and Trails Wayfinding pilot launched in Toronto's Lower Don Trail

The Mayor of Toronto, John Tory, was joined by City Councillors and representatives from partners including Evergreen and the Trans Canada Trail, when he launched the Toronto Parks & Trails Wayfinding Strategy and Lower Don Trail on Saturday 23rd September, as part of a weekend-long celebration of Toronto's unique ravine network. 

Commissioned in 2014, the Parks & Trails Wayfinding Strategy forms part of a series of coordinated pedestrian, cycling and vehicular wayfinding initiatives developed by Steer Davies Gleave and delivered by the City of Toronto and has culminated in the implementation of a pilot project in the Lower Don Valley Trail and Riverdale parks. 

The core objective of the Strategy is to deliver a signage and information system that is consistent, accessible, and predictable to support the wayfinding needs of the wide range of parkland users. It is an opportunity to reduce visual clutter, and encourage the use and discovery of parks and ravines by residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.

The development of the system has included detailed graphic and product design, sign prototyping, and wide-ranging consultation with stakeholders and the general public.

The city is now undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of the pilot project starting on 30 September.
