New signing for Steer’s Sports & Major Events team

Global consultancy Steer is pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Milner to its growing Sports & Major Events team, bolstering its ability to meet the increasing demand in helping cities, venues, and organisers plan and deliver events that are safe, seamless and strategically impactful across the world.

With decades of experience in strategy and delivery of global sporting, music and religious events – including UEFA EUROs, The Open and Rugby World Cup – Steer’s Sports & Major Events practice offers integrated services across transport and mobility, venue operations and crowd dynamics, event coordination and delivery, community engagement, sustainability, and strategic growth.

Joe joins the team with over a decade of experience in the major events sector, combining operational delivery expertise with strategic, client-side insight. Based in Steer’s Leeds office, his appointment evidences a commitment to the consultancy’s expanding client base in the North of England.

Joe’s career began at The Great Run Company, where he oversaw flagship mass participation events including the iconic Great North Run, the world's largest half marathon. He later played a pivotal role in the planning and delivery of the 2017 World Athletics Championships marathon and race walk events.

Most recently, Joe held the role of Product Manager at OnePlan, an event technology company specialising in GIS mapping and 3D visualisation tools for major global events. At OnePlan, he led product development initiatives for international clients, including the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as part of the IOC’s digital transformation programme for future Games planning and delivery.

Joe brings valuable client-side experience to Steer, offering a deep understanding of the priorities and challenges faced by event organisers and how consultancies can tailor their services and communications to meet evolving expectations.

“Joe’s appointment adds significant strength to our team. His blend of delivery know-how and client-side perspective is rare and timely. As our clients face increasingly complex demands—from digital integration to sustainability and crowd safety—Joe’s insight will help us respond with even greater clarity and impact,” says Simon Hall, Head of Sports & Major Events at Steer.

“I’m thrilled to have joined the team, having previously collaborated with Steer on several high-profile projects, including work for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Greater London Authority’s Women’s EURO 2022 programme. I’m looking forward to helping expand the company’s presence in the North of England,” adds Joe.
